Abstract: Picnic is a popular activity for Malaysians where family members and friends gather for social interactions. This activity can be done in different places such as the beaches, waterfalls, camping sites, parks, and even in the village during weekends and holidays. A staple food among locals during a picnic is roasted or grilled chicken and it is cooked using a chicken griller. A chicken griller is usually stationary while the portable ones on the market are mostly difficult to install due to multiple parts that are timely to assemble. They are also heavy and big in size, thus acquiring more space in a vehicle and harder to carry from one place to another. A prototype, namely HandySmart Lightweight Grill is designed and fabricated to provide a feasible solution to the problem. The objective of this prototype is to provide a lightweight and portable chicken griller that is easy to carry to the picnic sites. The prototype consists of several main components such as body and rotating parts which combined as a complete set of the griller. The material used for the body and the rotating parts are sheet metal steel and stainless steel respectively. The rotating part is powered by a direct current (DC) motor with a rated torque of 2.9 N.m. The novelty of this prototype is the folding technology, which allow the griller to be folded into a medium size briefcase-like design. The target market for the prototype is the picnic goers and the small and medium enterprise food stalls that sells grilled chicken. This prototype is expected to provide a hassle-free way for the consumers to carry a lightweight, portable, and foldable griller to that special picnic occasion.
