Abstract: Employee knowledge has become increasingly important for many organizations as a loss of knowledge can create challenges for the organization to remain competitive. The organization has begun to realize that employees’ knowledge is significant not only for their growth, but also development of new values and the benefit of the globalization economy. This study aims to identify factors in succession planning initiatives that contribute to the retention of knowledge among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia. In HEIs, the importance of succession planning and knowledge retention should always be managed properly and effectively in order to be successful. The HEIs have been selected due to succession planning has not been a well-defined initiative carried out by the educational organization in their strategic planning. A quantitative approach will be used to answer the research questions and objectives. The target population of this study will be the HEI academic staffs in Malaysia. A self-administrated survey questionnaire will be used to collect data from the targeted respondents. It is hoped that this research will lead to the development of a successful succession planning framework, shall lead to effective and efficient knowledge retention and avoid loss of knowledge costs for HEIs
