BANANA STRING

Abstract: The invention of the banana string is an effort to save the environment. Banana string comes as an alternative for the plastic string which is widely used not only in our country but also all around the world. Plastic consumption including plastic string had threatened our environment, and many campaigns had been launched to reduce the consumption of plastic in order to save the environment. People love to use plastic string because it is lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, and relatively inexpensive. However, the plastic string is very slow in the process of biodegradation, which means it will be staying in our environment for a very long period of time and will endanger the ecosystem. Meanwhile, the banana string is made from the banana leaf, a natural string that is strong and at the same time able to biodegrade. Obviously, the banana string will never become a threat to the environment as it is an organic material. İn the aspect of cost, the banana string will not cost much as it is easy to produce and only use the midrib part of the banana leaves. İt also can be made at home. To prove that the banana string can compete with the plastic string, a strength test had been conducted in the heavy structure lab of civil engineering faculty in UiTM Penang. The result shows that the banana string has more strength compared to the plastic string. The banana string can hold a load of more than 300 Newton, while the plastic string can hold a load between 260 Newton to 280 Newton. The result concluded that the banana string is worthy in becoming the alternative or maybe the replacement of the plastic string.
